Richard Hambleton 1952-2017

Richard Hambleton was a Canadian-born artist and a foundational figure of the 1980s New York art scene, known for his haunting “Shadowman” silhouettes painted across city streets. Born June 23, 1952, he created works that blurred the line between conceptual art and street intervention, often using the urban environment as his canvas.

His raw, emotionally charged paintings and enigmatic street figures established him as a key influence on contemporary urban art. Hambleton died on October 29, 2017, leaving behind a powerful and cult-iconic legacy.
