Gems is a screenprint by Andy Warhol created in 1975, part of his Gems series where he turned his attention to images of luxury and glamour. This work features multiple colorful, stylized images of sparkling gemstones arranged in a grid-like format, showcasing Warhol’s fascination with repetition and commercial imagery.
Using bright, vibrant colors and bold outlines, Warhol transforms gems—symbols of wealth, beauty, and consumer desire—into graphic icons. The repetitive pattern reflects the mass-production methods Warhol embraced, while also commenting on how objects of luxury are commodified and visually consumed in popular culture.
With Gems, Warhol invites viewers to reconsider the cultural value placed on precious objects and the way images circulate in the art and advertising worlds. The work blends the allure of high fashion with the accessibility of Pop Art’s everyday aesthetics.
