In Skulls (FS II.157) Warhol presents a lone human skull as his subject-matter—but he does so not in sombre memento mori tradition, but through the lens of pop-art flamboyance. The skull emerges from a field of gray and brown tones, its form delineated in black lines yet invaded by bold blocks of colour—a peachy-orange mass overlays one half, while a patch of magenta hovers beneath, creating a dynamic interplay of shape and hue.
