Gold Flag is a provocative artwork by British street artist Banksy, released in 2007. The piece reimagines the iconic image of American soldiers raising the U.S. flag—based on the historic World War II photograph taken at Iwo Jima. However, in Banksy’s version, the soldiers are planting not a flag, but a supermarket checkout receipt printed in gold.
This bold alteration turns a powerful symbol of patriotism and sacrifice into a biting commentary on modern consumerism, imperialism, and economic priorities. The use of the receipt in place of a flag suggests that capitalism and consumer culture have replaced traditional national values, while the gold coloring hints at greed, excess, and the glorification of wealth.
As with much of Banksy’s work, Gold Flag uses stark imagery and dark humor to raise questions about what society chooses to celebrate and fight for. The print’s minimalist style and powerful symbolism make it one of Banksy's more quietly haunting critiques of Western culture.
Released in a limited edition of 200 total prints—112 unsigned and 88 signed—Gold Flag remains a sought-after piece among collectors and fans of politically charged art.
