NOLA (White Rain) is one of Banksy’s most iconic and emotionally resonant prints, released in 2008 following the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans (NOLA). The artwork features a young girl holding an umbrella, seemingly shielding herself from the rain—yet the twist lies in the visual irony: the rain is falling from inside the umbrella, not outside of it.
This version, known as the White Rain edition, is the rarest of the NOLA colourways, with only 63 signed prints produced. The rain, rendered in white, creates a stark contrast against the monochrome figure and muted background, intensifying the surreal and haunting atmosphere of the piece.
NOLA is widely interpreted as a commentary on failed protection—where the very systems meant to shield and support individuals (governments, institutions, or symbols of safety) become sources of harm. Released three years after Hurricane Katrina, the piece critiques the mishandling of the disaster and reflects on themes of trust, vulnerability, and institutional collapse.
